How to measure Reddit and AI search visibility

How to measure Reddit and AI search visibility when no single number exists: five measurements in two groups, each with its denominator, date and limit.

There is no single number for Reddit and AI search visibility. A company can measure five things in two groups: how often answer engines recommend it, cite its site and rank it against competitors across a fixed sample of buyer questions on a recorded date, and whether its own pages give those engines something to read. Each carries a denominator and a limit, and the two groups never merge.

Why is there no single AI visibility number?

Three vendors publish enough of their method to be compared, and each counts something different. Profound's Answer Engine Insights overview, which its help center showed as updated three months before this article, defines a visibility score by dividing the responses that include your brand by the responses that include at least one brand, and a share of voice by dividing the responses that mention your brand by all brand mentions across all responses. Its separate citation patterns corpus, published June 5, 2025 and updated in August 2025, reports shares of 680 million citations collected from August 2024 to June 2025, a third denominator from one vendor.

Semrush's AI Visibility Metrics page, which carries no date beyond a 2026 copyright, describes AI Visibility as a benchmark from 0 to 100 showing how often a brand appears in AI answers compared with competitors, and publishes no formula for it.

Ahrefs' Brand Radar methodology, updated February 26, 2026, builds queries from Google's People Also Ask corpus and a 110 billion keyword database, and runs them at monthly volumes the page gives per engine, from roughly 13 million on Grok to 282 million on AI Overviews. It separates citations, meaning linked URLs, from mentions, meaning string matches, and its Estimated Impressions weight mentions by Google search volume, which the page calls a modeling choice rather than a measured relationship.

Google added a first-party count in 2026, announcing Search Generative AI performance reports in Search Console on June 3, 2026; a later note says that as of August 31, 2026 they had rolled out to all websites worldwide. The help page says the report includes impressions for AI Overviews and AI Mode, defines an impression as how many times links to your site were shown to a user in a generative AI feature, and lists no click figure. It is a count rather than a rate. The page also provides an export button and warns that values shown as "~" or "-", meaning not available, become zeros in the downloaded data.

An impression or a citation is a link that was shown, and a shown link is not a visit. Pew Research Center's short read of July 22, 2025, built on the March 2025 Google searches of 900 U.S. adults, found that users clicked a link inside an AI summary in 1% of visits to pages with such a summary, and clicked a traditional result in 8% of those visits against 15% of visits where no summary appeared. That is one engine more than a year ago, and it shows that being cited and being visited need separate counting.

The date matters as much as the method. In Semrush's three-month study, published November 10, 2025, of 230,000 prompts sampled weekly across ChatGPT search, Google AI Mode and Perplexity from July 14 to October 12, 2025, ChatGPT cited Reddit in close to 60% of prompt responses in early August and around 10% by mid-September. A share read without its date, its engine and its sample is a guess. So a company deciding whether Reddit and answer engines deserve a program at all, the case our piece on why Reddit and answer engines now matter for B2B discovery makes, should insist, as our note on reading the denominator argues, on four things before accepting any score: the count, what it was divided by, the date, and what could not be collected.

What is a Reddit visibility score?

People who search for a Reddit visibility score usually want to know whether the threads that answer engines draw on, and the answers built on them, name their company. No count of karma or upvotes measures that. As we use the phrase, it is a set of dated measurements of recommendations and official-site citations in a buyer-question sample, paired with the Reddit discussions and communities where those questions get asked.

Reddit enters the measurement twice: as one of the sources the engines cite, at rates that differ by engine and by month, which our reference piece on how often AI answers cite Reddit sets out study by study, and as the place where buyer questions get asked in the buyer's own words. We keep every source link for every answer, so the count of answers that drew on reddit.com can be checked against its evidence.

What answer engines say about you: three measurements

The first group comes from one record: a fixed set of buyer questions for your category, run through an answer engine with web search on a recorded date, with every completed answer kept alongside the sources it cited and the brands it named. All three measurements are counted from that record alone. The figures below use a fictional brand, Acorn, and a sample of six questions.

Recommendation presence

Recommendation presence is the share of completed buyer questions whose answer recommended the brand, each answer counted once however many times it repeats the name. Acorn was named in 2 of 6 completed answers, a figure of 33.

The count says nothing about why the brand appeared. The answer may have taken the name from a review site, a forum thread, the brand's own page or a competitor's comparison, and the number is the same in each case. It also says nothing about how warmly: a passing mention and a first-place recommendation each count as one appearance, so we record the order of recommendation separately.

Source visibility

Source visibility is the share of completed questions in which the brand's own domain was cited as a source. It is stricter than presence: pages the engine consulted without citing do not count, and a brand can be recommended in an answer that never links to its site, so the two figures move independently. Acorn's site was cited in 2 of 6 completed answers, a figure of 33.

What it cannot see is a click, which is the Pew finding above. For Google's surfaces, read the Search Console report's impressions next to your own citation count, and give its exported zeros the same suspicion as a blank cell of your own.

Competitive share

Competitive share is the brand's appearances divided by all tracked brand appearances across the completed answers, deduplicated within each answer. Our field guide's measurement section calls the same idea AI share of voice, and the phrase is fair as long as the sample is named: it is a share of these answers, never a market share. Acorn had 2 appearances out of 12 across the six answers, a figure of 17.

This measurement cannot give a stable trend if the tracked set changes underneath it. Add a competitor and you have added appearances to the denominator for every brand in the ranking; drop one and a brand can gain share in a month when its own appearances did not move. Compare the figure across runs only when the tracked set is the same, and never lay it over a vendor's share: Profound's visibility score leaves out answers that named no brand, so such an answer counts against no one, while a share over every completed question counts it against every brand equally.

What your site gives an answer engine to work with: two checks

The second group measures your side of the exchange. Google Search Central's guide to optimizing for generative AI search, last updated July 10, 2026, says that "the best practices for SEO continue to be relevant because our generative AI features on Google Search are rooted in our core Search ranking and quality systems", that no new machine-readable files, AI text files, markup or Markdown are needed to appear in Google Search, and that a page meeting every requirement is still not guaranteed to be crawled, indexed or served. The checks worth running are the ordinary ones, against the page you actually submitted.

Search foundations

Search foundations runs three checks on the returned HTML: a page title, a meta description, and the absence of a noindex directive. Its denominator is the checks completed, 3 of 3; Acorn's page passes all three for a figure of 100. The checks read the returned HTML only and do not prove that the page is indexed or ranks for anything.

On-page structure

On-page structure runs two checks, an H1 and parseable typed JSON-LD, with a denominator of 2 of 2; Acorn's page passes one for a figure of 50. These are presence checks: they do not measure content quality, schema correctness or eligibility for any search feature, and neither tells you whether the page will be cited. A page that passes is easier to fetch and read; the reason to cite it still has to come from what the page says.

Why the two groups never become one number

The practical reason is that they call for different work. A strong page with an absent brand needs participation where buyers ask their questions; a weak page with a present brand needs an editor. A blended figure hides which one you are looking at.

The arithmetic reason is that they have different denominators and describe different objects. The answer measurements are shares of answers on a date; the page checks are shares of a fixed check list. The mean of the two has no denominator, so no one could say what a change in it meant. They also move on different clocks: the answer sample can swing from week to week, as the Semrush figures show, while a page check changes only when someone edits the page.

A score is a dated observation. Its only job is to be comparable with the next one.

The same discipline runs within each group. When a question, an engine or a page could not be collected in a run, we leave that cell empty and say why, rather than writing a zero that would later read as a measured absence. None of the five figures predicts rankings, citations or sales; each records what was observed on a date so the next observation has something to stand against.

How to measure AI search visibility yourself

Anyone asking how to measure AI search visibility can take the first version without a vendor. This is the checklist we follow.

  • Write a fixed set of buyer questions in the words a buyer would use, and keep the list unchanged between runs, because changing one question changes the denominator.
  • Record the engine, the prompt, the date and time, the geography and the account state for every run; a figure without those is a number without a sample.
  • Keep the full text of every answer with every source link and every brand it named, so a count can be checked against its evidence later.
  • Count presence, citation and share separately, each with its own denominator written beside it, and never add the three into one figure.
  • Mark any question, engine or page that could not be collected as unmeasured, and leave the cell empty instead of writing a zero.
  • Read Google's generative AI performance report alongside your own sample for Google's surfaces, remembering that its export turns unavailable values into zeros.
  • Hold the tracked competitor set fixed between runs, and when it has to change, recompute the earlier share against the new set before you compare.

Getting from visibility to outcomes takes analytics and conversations with customers, which our older piece on going from a useful answer to a measurable outcome sets out. Any report of these figures should show the denominators and the blanks, the test our note on what a Reddit marketing report should include applies.

Questions people ask

How do you measure AI search visibility?

Write a fixed set of buyer questions, run them through an answer engine on a recorded date, keep every answer with its sources, and count separately how many answers name your brand, cite your domain and name each competitor. Write the denominator beside each count and compare it only with a later run of the same questions.

What is a Reddit visibility score?

As we use the phrase, it is a set of dated measurements of how a brand appears in answer-engine responses to buyer questions, paired with the Reddit discussions and communities where those questions get asked. It has nothing to do with a Reddit account or karma.

What is AI share of voice?

It compares one brand's appearances in a sample of AI answers with every tracked brand's appearances in the same answers, so it is a share of that sample and never a market share. A changed competitor set moves the denominator for every brand in the ranking, so compare it only across runs with the same tracked set.

Is an AI visibility score the same from every tool?

No. Profound, Semrush and Ahrefs each count something different and divide by something different, so the same brand gets a different number from each, and a score is comparable only with an earlier run of the same method on the same questions.
